Sugreeva took a safe shelter in Rishyamukh
Parvat, because Vali could not enter that place due to the curse of Maharishi
Matanga. Lord Rama met Sugreeva there and assured to help him out. He also cut
seven palm trees in a row with a single shot of his arrow convincing Sugreeva
of His strength. Rama sided with Sugreeva and killed Vaali for the reasons that
1) Vali captured Sugreeva’s wife 2) Vali didn’t forgive Sugreeva when he
surrendered.
After the death of Vali, Sugreeva was anointed
to the kingdom of Kishkindha. Sugreeva helped Ram with his whole monkey
brigade, his son Angada and Hanuman, a confidant of Sugreeva, in the search of
Sita and the subsequent war against Ravan.
Today, Rishimukh Parvat is a small hillock full
of stone boulders situated on the left bank of the Tungbhadra River near
Kodandarama temple. In the hillock or Rishimukh Parvat, sapta-maharishis like
Kshyapa, Atri, Bharadwaj, Vishwamitra, Gautam, Jamdagni and Vashishtha are said
to have meditated and obtained Jnana or enlightenment. Even to this day many
saints and sadhus inhabit the natural caverns and rock shelters.
