Pampa Saovara is the key place in Kishkindha as
in its vicinity only Shabari lived and waited fro Ram’s arrival for 13 long
years, on the advice of her Guru Rishi Matang. Shabri showed Ram the way where he would meet
Hanuman and Sugreev who would help Ram in the search of Sita. The description
of beauty of Pampa Sarovara and the vegetation around it, by none other than
Ram himself, in the epic Ramayan makes the Sarovar a special place in
Kishkindha. It is the place where Narad Muni came to meet Ram and got his
advice on Bhakti and qualities of a saintly person. Pampa Mahatmya gives a
graphic description of Hampi and provides about the glory of the Kshetra
(Region).
According to the scriptures, Pampadevi daughter
of Brahma conducted a deep meditation (Tapasya) on the banks of a tank
(Sarovar) near the Viprakuta hill range with the sole intention of marrying
Lord Shiva. Shiva pleased upon the prayers of Parvati married her and blessed
that the place be known as Pampa Sarovara and Pampa Kshetra, thus its
name. A copper plate inscription from
Anegundi mentions the details of Divine marriage of Shiva and Parvati. The
river Tungbhadra flows adjacent to Pampa Sarovara which is considered as river
Ganga.
Today, Pampa Sarovara is a square tank situated
at Anegondi. Adjacent to this tank, a
temple has come up with the deities Paravati and Lakshmi.
