Dates
back to 200 BC, Shankaracharya Temple is one of the oldest temples in Jammu and
Kashmir which has high religious significance too. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it
is often known as Jyesteshwara Temple. Located at an altitude of 1100 feet
above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of Pir Panjal mountain range.
During the famous Amarnath Yatra, the temple is visited by lots of devotees. It
is also believed that the great saint Shankaracharya visited this site around
10th centuries ago to spread his philosophy of Vedanta. He also used to worship
the Shiva Lingam, which is still found in the Inner Sanctum of the temple.
